VAT & Import Duties

IMPORTING GOODS INTO SWITZERLAND AND OTHER NON EU COUNTRIES

OVERVIEW

Import duty and taxes are payable when importing goods into Switzerland and other non EU countries, privately or commercially. The rates and calculations vary from country to country, however within Switzerland, import duty is calculated on weight of the shipment.  In addition to import duty, imports are subject to sales tax (VAT) which is calculated based on the cost of goods, insurance, freight and any applicable duty (CIFD).  Certain goods are also subject to excise tax.

IMPORT DUTY RATES

As mentioned above, import duty rates in Switzerland vary by weight and by product.  For example, toiletry items currently have a duty rate of CHF65 per 100 kg, and a wool carpet CHF74 per 100 kg.  Some goods can be imported duty free (e.g. books and some electronic products).
